Wisdom Tooth: To Extract or Not?

Impacted Wisdom Tooth Diagram

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25. While some people never have issues, for many, these teeth can cause significant pain and dental complications if there isn't enough room in the jaw for them to emerge properly.

What is an "Impacted" Wisdom Tooth?

An impacted wisdom tooth is one that gets stuck under the gum or grows in at an odd angle. This can push against your other teeth, causing crowding, infection, or even damage to the roots of neighboring healthy teeth.

Why is it Happening?

Evolutionarily, our jaws have become smaller over time, often leaving insufficient space for these final four molars. When they try to force their way in, they can become partially trapped, creating a pocket where bacteria thrive, leading to gum inflammation (pericoronitis).
